Sissi

Sisi (Sissi)

TransferPlan will transfer you from and to Sisi as quickly, safely and comfortably as possible. Sisi is a small Greek resort in the municipal unit Lasithi and it is situated on the north coast, 35 km east of Heraklion.

Sisi is a small Cretan village right by the seaside with narrow picturesque alleys and some traditional tavernas. Sisi's trademark would be the small natural harbour at the waterfront, with deep emerald water and a serene surface. The coastline of Sisi is quite rough and full of rocks, with the exception of a few pebble beaches. In addition, the sea tends to be wavy for the most part.

Sisi stands as a stark contradiction in the region and you can sense it as soon as you leave the more vibrant areas of Malia and Hersonissos. The absolute lack of mass tourism, bars and night-clubs have established Sisi as an oasis of peace and relaxation for the more solitary travellers and those who prefer a more rustic destination. The main road of the village doesn't reveal its charm straight away since it is your typical commercial street with tavernas, gift shops and holiday rentals. However, once you walk up to the harbour at the end of the road, your mind will be radically changed once you're met with the splendid views of the blue sea spreading all the way to the horizon ahead of you. Sisi is a truly idyllic place of simple, yet, great beauty fully encompassing the spirit of old Crete.

The harbour itself is a work of Mother Nature. The decaying coastline gave way to the sea, thus forming a narrow bay surrounded by a few rocks that also protect the harbour from the waves coming from the Libyan Sea. The bay is not only known for its outstanding beauty, but also for its rich historical heritage. In the times of the Cretan Revolution against the Ottoman Empire, Sisi bay was a strategic point for unloading guns and munitions for the brave Lasithi rebels. In these days the harbour is a place reserved for a few fishing boats and a common sight in the afternoon is this of fisherwomen sitting by the shore and shorting out the catch of the day.

The only beach in the village is located within the harbour. The beach itself is small and narrow but it also provides a few umbrellas, sunbeds and shower facilities for the beach-goers. Alternatively, you can head eastwards until you find the Harkoma Bay with the well-organized beach of Boufos. Boufos beach is sandy and tends to be windy for the most part. Right next to the bay you will find a smaller beach named Avlaki. A few meters on the east lies the sandy beach of the Kalimera Kriti Hotel. On the other side of the hotel, you will find Spiliada beach which is lined with tamarisk trees and is considerably less busy than the above options.

Once you visit Sisi you will inevitably yearn for more as it is the kind of place people always return to. It's unique beauty and its tranquil atmosphere will mesmerise you and will leave you with some of the most unique memories of Crete.

Crete Heraklion Port

Heraklion Port

TransferPlan will transfer you from and to Heraklion Port as quickly, safely and comfortably as possible. Heraklion port is situated at the center of Heraklion Prefecture’s northern coast and adjacent to island’s capital.

The modern Heraklion port was firstly established in the 20th century and expanded eastwards of its older predecessor, the 700-year-old Venetian port that now serves as an attraction and a place of pleasure. Heraklion port is the second largest and busiest harbour in Greece after Piraeus.

The port is conveniently located along the middle part of the Cretan highway that serves the northern part of the island. The highway offers an easy getaway to the towns of Agios Nikolaos, Sitia, Kissamos, Rethymnon, Chania and Heraklion. It is busy all-year-round with an approximate number of 2 million visitors annually. The port services very popular routes such as Piraeus-Athens, Thessaloniki and a number of Aegean islands. Itineraries are regular and for other major ports, ships depart daily.

The Harbour hosts visitors for both touristic purposes and commercial activities. It possesses an array of facilities for the convenience of all travellers. In close proximity to the port, one can find in abundance shops, cafes and restaurants within a short walking distance.

The port is an 'umbrella' term covering both the new Heraklion Ferry Port and the old Venetian Harbour. The 'Castello a Mare' more widely known as Koules is a significant walled structure marking the entrance to the old Venetian port. The fortress dates back to the 16th century and is presumed that Cretan rebels were tortured in its underground chambers by mercenaries of the Ottoman Empire during the times of Crete's occupation. The Heraklion old town is located nearby, thus after a visit to the Fortress travellers can enjoy a walk through the vibrant streets of the city or taste some delicacies prepared by the friendly and hospitable locals.
