Heraklion Town Crete

Heraklion Town

TransferPlan will transfer you from and to Heraklion town as quickly, safely and comfortably as possible. Heraklion boasts the title of the largest urban entity in Crete and is also the administrative capital of the island. Heraklion has an immense historical and cultural heritage, as in close proximity to the city visitors can find the Palace of Knossos, which has served as the centre of Minoan civilisation. Throughout the city, you can also find a number of constructions dating back to the Venetian occupation such as Koules Fortress in the old port.

Heraklion is home to some world class monuments and cultural landmarks. Among the most outstanding man-made structures is the Heraklion Fortress that contains the 'old town'. Originally built by Arab merchants and later on reinforced by Venetians, the Fortress included seven bastions, of which only the Martinego bastion survives the passing of time. Moreover, visitors will be delighted to find one of the gates to the city, named Chanioporta, which is ornate with the winged lion of Saint Marc. Visitors can also pay pilgrimage to the grave of one of Greece's most important writers and Nobel recipient, N. Kazantzakis. The sight that marks his resting place also offers some mesmerising views of the city.

Throughout the city, one can spot statues and monuments commemorating prolific figures that have been important for Greece's course through history and have contributed to Crete's immense cultural heritage. Some of the names include renaissance painter El Greco, Poet Vicenzo Kornaros and Politician Eleftherios Venizelos.

Moreover, the Archaeological museum should be on the top of every visitor's list; a splendid space that boasts a massive collection of ancient artefacts from all over the island and covers more than 5,500 years of history. Special emphasis is given to the spoils of Minoan civilisation, which has been one of the first to spring in the Southern European cost and was almost entirely wiped out by a volcanic eruption and a subsequent tsunami. The museum is home to the most important collection of surviving Minoan antiquities in the world and awaits its visitors to explore the mysteries of this extinguished civilisation.

Nowadays, Heraklion represents a beacon of Greek modernization and has been subjected to an extensive urban sprawl, that gives it a truly unique character. Despite the expansion of concrete residential blocs and the immense traffic, a short walk through the bustling streets and alleys will travel you through thousand years of history and will reveal to you the hip side of Greece with its rich coffee culture and culinary delights that can be found in every corner.

Kalyves Crete

Kalyves

TransferPlan will transfer you from and to Kalyves as quickly, safely and comfortably as possible. Kalyves lies 20 km east of Chania town in the Apokoronas area and it is on the coast of Souda Bay. Kalyves is ideal for family holidays or used as a base to explore the east part of Crete. This beach resort is in one of the most picturesque and untouched areas of the island and here you can enjoy the Cretan hospitality and the great traditional food.

Kalyves is located in the same coastline with Almyrida and Plaka which are really famous amongst Cretans for their lovely sandy beaches and the beautiful landscape. Kalyves are becoming very popular amongst tourists who visit the island year by year and also buying houses and apartments. Here and general in the Drapanos area you will find picturesque villages, mountains and hills ideal for hiking, spring waters, all worth visiting. Kalyves in Greek means “Huts” and the name seems to owe its origins from the primitive huts that the farmers used to build in the fields. On the east side of Kalyves village flow the rivers of Xidas and Mesopotamos. On both sides of the river Xidas, you will find two beautiful beaches, with shallow waters, but because they are open to north winds, sometimes wavy. These two beaches are well organized with umbrellas, sunbeds and all the basic facilities for tourists. The old harbour of Kalyves is located next to one of the beaches of Xidas, where you can have a walk and watch the local fishermen fixing their fishnets.

One kilometre north of Kalives is the famous beach of Kiani Akti, which is at the exit of river Kiliaris. Kiliaris is one of the few rivers in Crete that has water all year round, that’s why the seawater near the river is very cold but very refreshing. Kalives is considered to be the location of the ancient city of Amfimatrion. In 1206 the Venetians built one fortress on the east side of the village so as to defend from pirate attacks. That fortress is known as Castel Apicorno and was destroyed by the famous pirate Barbarossa. The wider province of Vamos is named Apokoronas after the castle.

At the old harbour, you can see the German cannon hidden in a cave excavated up till the other side of the mountain. At the end of the tunnel, there is a small window, where the view to the cliffs and the sea is fascinating. This is a very small sample of the German defensive projects that are spread in the wider area of province Apokoronas and Akrotiri Cape. Furthermore, you should walk in the beautiful narrow scenic streets of the village and end up in the central square of the village with the large tree, near the church of Agia Paraskevi. The church bears murals and was built during the German Occupation.
