Ligaria

In general, you should avoid the east part of the beach which is less protected from the waves. Instead, if you head to the west side the water is always calm and cleaner. You should keep in mind that Lygaria is very famous amongst locals, as it is very close to Heraklion town, so on weekends is very hard to find a parking place. Behind the beach and on the rocks on the sides of the bay are a few houses owned by locals. That's about the whole village, tiny and beautiful. If you want you can walk till Agia Pelagia where you can find more restaurants and more choices in general or just for a change. It is a walk of about 20 minutes, up and down the hill.
