Karteros

On this long bay there are two settlements, Karteros and Amnissos, but because of the rapid tourism development, the two villages are now merged to one.

The next beach east of Karteros beach is named Xenia, after a local abandoned hotel. East of Xenia beach is the hill of Paleohora. The archaeologists believe that this is where the ancient town of Amnisos was built. The excavations have revealed several buildings, a large temple and a Minoan harbour. To the east, you will find the famous Minoan Lilies villa. This villa is considered to be the resort house of King Minos. East of the villa is the last part of Karteros bay which is called Tobruk. Here you will find a lot of restaurants, hotels and fish taverns. The beachfront is also very well organized with a nice sandy beach.

Karteros is ideal for family holidays or it can be used as a base for exploring Crete. It is a little bit noisy though as the aeroplanes approach the landing airway of Nikos Kazantzakis airport from this part of the island.
