Heraklion Airport Nikos Kazantzakis

Heraklion Airport

TransferPlan will transfer you from Heraklion airport to Souda as quickly, safely and comfortably as possible. Heraklion International Airport, "Nikos Kazantzakis" is the primary airport on the island of Crete and the country’s second busiest airport after Athens International Airport. It is located about 5 km east of the main city center of Heraklion, near the municipality of Nea Alikarnassos. It is a shared civil/military facility.

The airport took its name after the Cretan native and most famous Heraklion resident Nikos Kazantzakis, who left his mark in Greek history as a novelist and philosopher. Heraklion Airport is Crete's largest and busiest airport, also serving as a connection between Agios Nikolaos, Malia, Hersonissos, Stalida, Elounda and other resort towns. The airport has been operating since the late 30s and its annual number of passengers is approximately 5 million. The airport serves both domestic and international flights.

Heraklion Airport is operating in a renovated and modern space since 1971. The airport complex has been expanded in order to accommodate increased traffic and serve an ever-increasing flight network. Especially during peak season, the airport gets really busy, thus some sporadic delays are expected.

The proximity of the airport to the Heraklion town allows the visitor some spare time to explore or simply wind out and have a nice lunch or drink in the local eateries. Furthermore, around the airport, one can find some excellent hotels and resorts in case an overnight stay is required. The historical site of Knossos Palace and the Archaeological Museum are also located nearby and can be easily reached from the airport with our help. Navigating through the airport can be a daunting task, airport staff will be readily available to assist you.

Souda Port Chania

Souda

TransferPlan will transfer you from and to Souda as quickly, safely and comfortably as possible. Souda is located 6.5 km east of the town of Chania on the road to Rethymnon. The town is located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Souda. Souda is a relatively new settlement, built on what used to be salt beds and swamp.

The Turks used to call the area “Tuzla”, which means salt bed. In the 70’s they began to build a settlement for the port workers and as the port was expanding so did the settlement. Souda Bay is one of the deepest natural harbours in the Mediterranean and is easy to defend, that’s why it is so important as a geostrategic port. In Souda, you can find many hotels and apartments to rent and its proximity to Chania Town makes it an ideal destination for visitors. From Souda one can visit the interesting surrounding region as well as Aptera which used to be a powerful city of Greece and where Roman and Byzantine remain and a Turkish fort can still be seen. It is more like a working town than a typical tourist destination. There is also a large military presence in the town, as Souda port is also a NATO base.

Now Souda is the arrival point for ferries from Piraeus. There is also a naval base located in Souda and across the bay, for NATO, with military accommodation and hospital in the town. Much of the command, particularly for US forces, is found across the bay on the Akrotiri. A grain silo overshadows the centre of town. Perhaps because of its nature as a departure point and military town, it is not popular with tourists and can appear seedy and threatening. However, it is well-served with shops of all types and some renowned fish restaurants in the old centre. The Allied war cemetery, mostly of soldiers from World War II, is found in Souda on the shore. There are 1,527 graves, mostly British with 447 New Zealanders and 197 Australians.
