Heraklion Airport Nikos Kazantzakis

Heraklion Airport

TransferPlan will transfer you from Heraklion airport to Palekastro as quickly, safely and comfortably as possible. Heraklion International Airport, "Nikos Kazantzakis" is the primary airport on the island of Crete and the country’s second busiest airport after Athens International Airport. It is located about 5 km east of the main city center of Heraklion, near the municipality of Nea Alikarnassos. It is a shared civil/military facility.

The airport took its name after the Cretan native and most famous Heraklion resident Nikos Kazantzakis, who left his mark in Greek history as a novelist and philosopher. Heraklion Airport is Crete's largest and busiest airport, also serving as a connection between Agios Nikolaos, Malia, Hersonissos, Stalida, Elounda and other resort towns. The airport has been operating since the late 30s and its annual number of passengers is approximately 5 million. The airport serves both domestic and international flights.

Heraklion Airport is operating in a renovated and modern space since 1971. The airport complex has been expanded in order to accommodate increased traffic and serve an ever-increasing flight network. Especially during peak season, the airport gets really busy, thus some sporadic delays are expected.

The proximity of the airport to the Heraklion town allows the visitor some spare time to explore or simply wind out and have a nice lunch or drink in the local eateries. Furthermore, around the airport, one can find some excellent hotels and resorts in case an overnight stay is required. The historical site of Knossos Palace and the Archaeological Museum are also located nearby and can be easily reached from the airport with our help. Navigating through the airport can be a daunting task, airport staff will be readily available to assist you.

Palekastro

Palekastro

TransferPlan will transfer you from and to Palekastro as quickly, safely and comfortably as possible. Palekastro is a small village 20 km from the town of Sitia in the region of Lasithi, in the east of Crete.

In Paleokastro you will find a very rich agrarian landscape, the village is surrounded by olive groves, grapevines, gardens and rugged hills. Another natural sight of rare beauty is the flat-topped Hill of Kastri. Kastri stands above the village and separates the coastline in two parts.

In Paleokastro you can find many traditional establishments and very rich historical and cultural heritage. First off, you can explore Greek coffee culture by visiting a 'Kafenion', basically a small coffee house frequented by locals. You can also visit the Cretan Folklore museum, which is housed within the premises of an actual restored traditional Cretan mansion. Then you can find some early 20th century artefacts and antiquities that will give you a glimpse into the daily lives of the locals. Most residents are employed in the agricultural sector; thus the region is famous for a great produce of high-quality olive oil, wine, cheese, fish, all perfectly incorporated within the local cuisine. Paleokastro is a great place to experience the hospitality of locals and their rich culinary culture.

Between the village and the bay is the ancient Minoan site of the township Roussolakkos. This settlement dates back to 2000 BC and it was the second largest Minoan settlement after Knossos. Roussolakkos is a significant historical site, where archaeologists managed to retrieve several items and draw a clear picture of what life in Minoan Crete looked like.

The first thing you want to do as you reach Paleokastro is to get to the beach. To reach the local beach of Chiona is only a short walk away from the village centre. Chiona is a beautiful and quiet sandy beach with blue crystal-clear waters. However, if there is a 'star beach' in Paleokastro that would be Vai, where 'Bounty' used the beach as the location for some of their commercials in the 90s. Vai is only 8km away from the centre of Paleokastro and is an easy car ride away.

If you are more interested in tracing historical and natural sights, then you can book some excellent boat trips, that will take you into scenic bays and to the historical sight of Spinalonga island. Worth mentioning is also the Toplou Monastery near the region of Sitia. Moreover, you can visit the fourth Minoan Palace of the island at Zakros, or explore the Roman ruins of Ithanos.

Paleokastro is an ideal place to experience 'real' Crete in its simplest and most authentic form. Time pasts slowly here and locals keep age all traditions alive in a very fast-paced modern world.
